Tate Modern

We had a full day at the Tate Modern art gallery on Sunday.  Once a former power station on ther banks of the Thames, is now the most popular modern art gallery in the world!
Chinese artist, Ai Weiwei showcases his amazing "Sunflower Seeds" ~
Each of these porcelain seeds has been individually sculpted, hand molded and painted by thousands of crafters in Southern China.  Everybody in China knew of somebody that was working on the project!  There are over 150 tons of seeds ~ 100 million!  The magnitude and landscape of the Sunflower Seeds is mind blowing as it fills an entire turbine of the gallery!
The artist chose sunflower seeds because many people carry them in their pockets and have a tendency to share them.  They are meant to symbolize human kindness and compassion.

Ai Weiwei was also the artist consultant for the design of the Beijing National Stadium for the 2008 Summer Olympics.  You may recall the dome known at the Bird's Nest while viewing the Olympics.

Some other pieces of beautiful artwork we encountered~ Gauguin 1897

We spent a good amount of time in the wing devoted to the radical 1970's art movement

*The upper levels of the gallery have some of the most fantastic views of the city~

Good night Tate.
